Job Classification: Firefighter/Paramedic
The City is accepting applications from February 20, 2023 through March 31, 2023 for the classification of Firefighter/Paramedic. The City of Bowling Green is building an eligibility list in order to fill vacancies in 2023.
Job Requirements:
- Must possess high school diploma or equivalent
- Paramedic Certification: It is preferred that applicants be certified by the State of Ohio as a Paramedic at the time of application; however, candidates currently enrolled in a Paramedic Program may apply. (The City will not pay for the paramedic training program.) A copy of a valid paramedic certification and/or proof that the candidate is currently enrolled in a paramedic program must be provided at the time of application. New hires MUST be certified by the State of Ohio as a Paramedic by the end of their one-year probationary period. Failure to obtain the paramedic certification during the probationary period will result in termination of employment. Certification must be maintained for the duration of the Firefighter/Paramedic's career.
- Firefighter II Certification: Not required to apply but candidates will be scheduled as soon possible following hire and must be completed by the end of the probationary period. Ohio Fire Academy training will be paid for by the City of Bowling Green. Failure to successfully complete the Firefighter II certification will result in termination of employment.
- Valid OHIO State Driver's License: Must possess a valid Ohio Driver' License
- US Citizen: Must be eligible to work in the United States of America
- All hires must serve a one-year probationary period.
Application/Testing Process:
1. National Testing Network: The written testing will be done through the National Testing Network. Candidates who have tested with the NTN during the prior twelve months will need to apply their scores to Bowling Green's current posting in order to be considered. NTN scores must be valid (not expired) on the application deadline of March 31st, 2023. Passing of the NTN's FireTEAM is required for this position. Candidates must submit verification that they currently hold a valid/current certification that they have passed the NTN's FireTEAM exam with a minimum passing average score of at least 70; however, all sections of the NTN examination must be passed. Any cost for taking these exams are the responsibility of the candidate. To be considered on this eligibility list, all testing must be completed by March 31st, 2023.
2. Physical Agility Test: Candidates must complete and pass either the Bowling Green Fire Division's Physical Agility test or the Firefighter Mile by March 31, 2023. Candidates wishing to take the BGFD agility test must contact the Fire Division at 419.352.3106 to obtain an information packet and schedule an appointment. Candidates wishing to complete the Firefighter Mile must schedule a test through the NTN.
3. City of Bowling Green Application for Employment: All candidates must complete a City of Bowling Green Employment application that is available either online at https://www.bgohio.org/Jobs.aspx or in the Department of Human Resources located at 304 N. Church St., Bowling Green, OH 43402 Resumes alone are unacceptable. 4. Veteran's Credit: Section 7.01 of the City's Charter provides for an additional credit of 10% of a passing test score for honorably discharged veterans. A candidate's DD Form 214 documenting an honorable discharge must be submitted at the time of application in order to be eligible for the veteran's credit.
5. Age: Ohio law (ORC 124.42) and City ordinance provide that no person shall be eligible to receive an original appointment in the fire service unless the person has reached the age of eighteen (18) and has not reached his/her forty-first birthday. The age restriction is permitted by the Public Safety Exemption to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (29 U.S. Code 623 (j).
Salary Information:
Firefighter/Paramedic (already has Ohio paramedic certification) at time of hire: Step 1: $22.08/ hour/ $63,493 annually, includes 11 paid holidays. Should a candidate not have his/her paramedic certification at time of hire, he/she will be placed as either Firefighter/EMT-I or Firefighter/EMT-B until paramedic certification is achieved:
Firefighter/EMT-I (enrolled in paramedic program) at time of hire: Step 1: $21.51/hour/ $61,854 annually, includes 11 paid holidays
Firefighter/EMT-B (enrolled in paramedic program) at time of hire: Step 1: $21.39 hour/$61,508 annually, includes 11 paid holidays

Department Overview: The Bowling Green Fire Division, internationally accredited by the Commission of Fire Service Accreditation International (CFAI), is a career combination fire and emergency medical services department. The fire division is an "all hazards" emergency response agency, which provides protection to the approximately, 31,500 residents of the City, including Bowling Green State University students. Additionally, the fire division has earned an Insurance Services Office (ISO) class 2 rating. The Bowling Green Fire Division provides fire and EMS coverage to approximately 12.6 square miles of urban area located within the City of Bowling Green and fire coverage of approximately 3.4 square miles of rural area in Plain Township. The fire division responds to approximately 3400 emergency calls annually from two fire/EMS stations. The fire division currently provides services to the citizens of the Bowling Green with 36 firefighters, 2 chief officers, 3 captains and 12 shift lieutenants. The fire division pursues progressive and ambitious goals related to continuous service delivery improvement.
Area Information: The Bowling Green Fire Division is located within the City of Bowling Green, Ohio. The City of Bowling Green is a suburban community covering approximately 12.6 square miles. The City of Bowling Green is located in Northwestern Ohio in Wood County (City of Bowling Green Home Town Locator http://ohio.hometownlocator.com/oh/wood/bowling-green.cfm) approximately 15 miles south of Toledo, Ohio.
Hiring Process: Section 7.01 of the City's Charter: When a vacancy occurs in the entry-level position of the of Fire Division to be filled by appointment, the Civil Service Commission shall certify to the appointing authority the names of five (5) person standing highest on the eligibility list for such position. The appointing officer shall appoint one such person to such position.
