Fire Engineer (Full-Time)

Hiring Range of $42,502 – $46,752, depending upon experience and qualifications.

The City of Marion is seeking applicants for a Fire Engineer. Job Summary:
The City’s Fire Department is a team of dedicated fire professionals who serve the Marion Fire District. Fire Engineers operate and maintain fire apparatus and firefighting equipment; provide emergency medical service; and perform firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response/mitigation. They also train volunteers in firefighting and equipment operation activities; participate in incident response and fire suppression training; and serve as incident commanders when needed. Work also includes testing hydrants, preparing pre-fire plans, and participating in fire prevention activities.  Candidates should possess the ability to make effective decisions under pressure in all aspects of work, particularly in operating apparatus during fire response.   

Detailed Description of Duties:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    Responds to alarms and participates in incident responses, including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required; responds to and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, confined spaces, swift water rescue, and other related incidents; responds to emergency medical incidents and provides EMT services; responds and provides technical rescue services; assists with supervision of volunteers.
    Drives apparatus to incident scene; properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs; ensures proper connection, operation and pressure of hoses; issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns fire apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response; participates in post-fire operations of cleaning and salvage.
    Participates in fire inspections to enforce the fire safety provisions of the State building codes; researches and documents pre-fire plans; checks hydrants for proper functioning.
    Inspects station building and grounds for proper appearance and condition; performs cleaning, maintenance and repair on station and grounds.
    Performs routine maintenance, servicing and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, hydrants, hose lines, and related facilities, equipment and supplies.
    Performs inspection and maintenance of equipment to include SCBA maintenance and repair, radio equipment maintenance and repair, and hydrant maintenance, etc.
    Assists with the preparation of fire reports and other manual and digital record keeping; participates in special projects as required. 
    Participates in training on shift and when required on other occasions; participates in fire pre-planning, fire inspections, fire education and prevention programming, and other related activities.
    Assists in field training of personnel in fire related duties; serves as a specialized fire instructor; maintains training hours as required by department policy.
    Participates in public relations activities such as tours, classes, and open houses.
    Performs related duties as required.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines:
Interested candidates will be assessed on the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
    Considerable knowledge of modern firefighting techniques, procedures, and principles.
    Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of emergency equipment and apparatus used by the City including pumpers and aerial equipment.
    Considerable knowledge of incident response, including response to hazardous materials spills, technical rescue, and emergency medical service calls.    
    Considerable knowledge of the geography of the City; working knowledge of the location of hydrants and fire alarm boxes.
    Considerable knowledge of the maintenance and repair of fire and first responder equipment.
    Considerable knowledge of the hazards of firefighting, appropriate safety precautions, and OSHA requirements.
    Considerable knowledge of the principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression.
    Knowledge of departmental rules and regulations.
    Skill in the operation and use of firefighting equipment and apparatus.
    Ability to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
    Ability to accept firefighting discipline and operational routine.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, volunteers, and the general public.

Environmental Conditions:

    The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters.  The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens.  

Physical Requirements:
    Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, handling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
    Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds and more of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly.
    Must possess visual acuity to size up the color, volume, and extent of fire involvement in structures, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports.

Special Requirements:
    Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B driver’s license.
    Possession of Firefighter, Rescue, Driver/Operator/Pumps Certification, Wildland Firefighting Certification and other certifications that may be required by the City.

Preferred Education / Experience: 
    Graduation from high school and considerable experience as a Firefighter preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
