- Assisting library users with technology, reference and readers advisory questions
- Presenting computer, electronic resource and Internet training for the public
- Training computer lab volunteers
- Assisting library users with common computer hardware and software problems
- Assisting with collection development/maintenance
- Researching specialized topics and information needs for library patrons, library administration and City staff
- Promoting library services in the community
- Preparing periodic statistical reports
- Developing brochures and fliers for programs
- Participating in team decision-making, staff development and training
- Performing other related duties as assigned
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
The incumbent will have considerable knowledge of area of focus to include supervisory and management practices, basic cataloging, development trends and best practices, electronic databases and related software applications such as Deep Freeze, Envisionware, Google Suite, LPT One, Word Press, etc., some marketing and promoting of programs, and thorough understanding of specific field, program, or area of expertise such as legal, children and youth, etc. The incumbent will be skilled in assisting in program set-up and tear-down, conducting reference interviews, trainings, and seminar, comprehending patrons' needs and problems, developing, implementing, and managing a collection for a specific class or program, exploring funding options for various initiatives and assisting the Foundation as needed, making data driven decisions regarding community needs and solutions to community challenges, planning and conducting relevant programs for branch and system, providing assistance at the circulation desk to ensure all patrons' needs are met such as what resources to use and suggestions when material is not readily available, researching, preparing, teaching, and educating through classroom, one-on-one, print, or computerized resources, using catalogs, databases, and other information sources effectively and efficiently to locate items, and writing grants and reports as needed. The incumbent will possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, public speaking skills, excellent oral and written communication, and a high level of decision making and creativity.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in library science ALA accredited
- Four (4) years of public library experience
- One year of supervisory experience
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent customer service, enthusiasm, energy and interpersonal skills
- In depth experience with desktops, laptops, tablets, eBooks' readers, smartphones and video equipment
- Experience developing system wide programs and training staff in new subject matters
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be eligible and able to obtain Librarian's Professional Certification through the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of time.
