Recreation Superintendent

$85,604.00 - $97,833.00 Salary/year

The City of Wentzville is seeking a dynamic and experienced Recreation Superintendent to lead our Recreation Division. This role is responsible for planning, promoting, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive recreation program that caters to both the passive and active recreational needs of our residents. The ideal candidate will demonstrate considerable independent judgment and initiative in managing a team of professionals and supervisory staff, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality recreational programs and services.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Management:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive recreation program.
  • Address the diverse recreational needs of the Wentzville community.

Staff Leadership and Supervision:

  • Lead, monitor, and supervise a team of professional and supervisory staff.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor employees to achieve performance and quality standards.
  • Handle employment actions, including hiring, termination, discipline, and promotions.

Operational Coordination:

  • Coordinate activities with other divisions, departments, and external agencies.
  • Provide complex administrative support to the Director.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Manage the division's budget.
  • Oversee the planning and development of recreational programs and services.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Prior experience in the field may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in recreation management, including at least four years of full-time supervisory experience required.
  • Additional job-related advanced degrees or certifications may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification is required.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification is preferred.
  • A valid drivers license is required.

  • Ability to perform high-level analytical tasks.
  • Ability to provide exceptional service to internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to manage and monitor division operations and services and implement procedural changes as needed to improve workflow and productivity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, subordinates, co-workers, and customers by telephone, in writing, and in person.
  • Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work for self and others, as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and make responsible decisions.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Proficiency in using basic business software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, presentations) and basic office equipment.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential job duty. The job requires being reliable, responsible and dependable.
