Chesterfield County's Information Systems Technology Department is seeking a part-time Communications Technician.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; one year of experience operating multiple computer systems utilizing similar operating systems and applications; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Good working knowledge of ANSI/TIA/EIA568-B wiring standards and be familiar with the national electric code and local laws pertaining to copper and fiber structured cabling. Candidate must possess the ability to install and terminate CAT5e/CAT6 wiring, coaxial cable, standard copper cabling using 66 or 110 style termination blocks. Other specialized cabling for security equipment such as cameras and panic alarms. Be familiar with Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya Aura Messaging. Basic network knowledge a plus. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Ability to build and maintain documentation and manage helpdesk incidents for voice and network-related issues. Good driving record required. Must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one more major violation of six demerit points within preceding thirty- six months. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. This position is subject to working in areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.
Duties
The ideal candidate will install, maintain and troubleshoot analog, digital, POTS, Centrex, VoIP, COAX as well as other forms of telecommunications equipment and/or devices. This position is to provide support related to the implementation, configuration, maintenance, monitoring and support of the county's telecommunications environment. This includes activities such as installation of equipment in data closets, access and escort services for vendors and county staff in high-security environments, equipment maintenance and upkeep of data closets and related telecommunications and structured cabling in MDF and IDF closets.
Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty such as handling service requests for wiring work and working with the wiring technician for cable installation. This position provides direct support to customer departments as well as all functional areas within IST. This position will be responsible for assisting the network administration team with day to day operations of managing and maintaining the telephone and network infrastructure. Maintains inventory of telecommunication and network equipment. Perform other work as required.
