Utilities Chesterfield County's Department of Utilities is seeking GPS Specialist.
This position will be a part of the Engineering Date Management Section of the Utilities Department. The GPS Specialist has a broad range of responsibilities related to the collection of water and wastewater assets utilizing survey grade GPS equipment and mobile mapping software. The position utilizes ArcMap daily and will be required to edit GIS data layers. Duties include collecting and creating accurate GPS data; reviewing and prioritizing utility location requests; operating a variety of technical equipment used to locate utilities, including a personal computer and GPS equipment. Perform other work as required. Successful candidate will possess an associate's degree in surveying, drafting, geography or a related field, and one year of experience in GPS collection or surveying; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Good knowledge of the principles of GPS and surveying. ArcMap and AutoCAD experience are desirable. Experience with Trimble GPS field and office products preferred. Experience with water and wastewater utility infrastructures is desirable. The position requires the ability to work with minimal supervision; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, including walking at least 2 miles in rugged terrain while carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds; ability to stand for prolonged periods; to operate a machete, probing rod, 10 pound sledge hammer, shovel, pick and other manual digging devices; and to climb in and out of trenches, work along and in busy roads and active construction sites. Good driving record required. Must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one more major violation of six demerit points within preceding thirty- six months.
