About the Department:

The Office of University Branding (OUB) at George Mason University is responsible for telling the Mason story. Relying on a team of highly skilled communicators and marketing professionals, the department builds awareness and support for the university, develops and protects the brand, and shares important and timely information with the Mason community and its external partners.

About the Position:

George Mason University's Office of University Branding seeks a part-time FOIA Assistant responsible for assisting with the support of the administration of FOIA requests, including reading and editing documents for redactions, applying redactions, and preparing documents for final release. The University FOIA office supports Mason's mission by responding to the Virginia state Freedom of Information Act requests, as required by state law.

The FOIA Assistant will be a member of the Vice President and Chief Brand Officer's administration team. This individual will be a team member charged with supporting the responsiveness of FOIA requests which includes facilitating requests between and among departments as needed.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to effectively communicate and have good computer skills;
  • Exhibits strong attention to detail and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrates excellence in customer service;
  • Ability to work professionally and with discretion handling documents containing confidential and sensitive information;
  • Ability to work varying amounts, between 2 hours to 30 hours per week, depending on the needs of the department. This is a “surge capacity” position and the individual will need to be able to work as little as 2 hours to as much as 30 hours per week, depending on the week; flexibility is needed; and
  • Candidate must have a solid understanding of Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF and basic good computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with redacting documents in Word and PDF is ideal, but not required.
