DEFINITION
Under clinical supervision of the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner as needed and reporting to
the Psychiatric Nurse Coordinator and Outpatient Services Supervisor for administrative
supervision, this position provides medical services including obtaining vital sign information,
administering psychotropic medication via injection to consumers, and collecting blood and
urine specimens for ordered lab work. This individual is responsible for medication receipt.
This position includes educational services to consumers and coordination of care between
primary care providers and agency staff to ensure the overall health and well-being of
consumers.
JOB EXPECTATIONS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide medical services to consumers who may been diagnosed with mental health,
intellectual and/or developmental, or substance use disorders, collecting vital sign
information.
• Collect blood and urine specimens and forward to lab as directed.
• Administer injections of medication to consumers.
• Make referrals and coordinate care with primary care providers.
• Maintain documentation in Electronic Health Record as required in the delivery of
services.
• Keep track and report direct service and time spent in consumer-related activities in a
timely manner.
• Monitor consumers’ use of therapeutic medications.
• Provide medication management, including delivering medications and monitoring
consumers.
• Provide nursing support for agency’s Psychiatric Services Team.
• Assure the confidentiality of protected health information as required by law and
according to the GPCS confidentiality policies, state law, and in the Federal Drug and
Alcohol Confidentiality Law, 42 CFR Part 2, as applicable.
• Report any behavior issues with a consumer.
• Be available to intervene when needed in consumer emergencies occurring during
operating hours.
• Participate at conferences, continuing education, in-service training and staff
development activities which impact on the delivery of services.
• Perform other assigned duties as necessary within established policy and procedures.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Course of studies required to be a Licensed Practical Nurse at minimum
EXPERIENCE
None required, but 1-2 years of experience in a medical office or hospital is desirable
LICENSE(S)
Licensed Practical Nurse at minimum
Position will be required to possess a valid Virginia driver's license

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of nursing services, professional standards of practice, and techniques.
• Knowledge of consumers with intellectual, developmental, and mental disabilities and
behavioral situations.
• Knowledge of consumers with substance use disorders.
• Knowledge of therapeutic medication, their intended effects and side effects.
• Knowledge of health and medical records documentation and entry into Electronic
Health Record system.
• Knowledge of pharmaceutical providers and patient assistance programs.
• Knowledge of OSHA standards
• Knowledge of Goochland Powhatan Community Services policies and procedures.
• Ability to perform all medical functions required of a Licensed Practical Nurse at
minimum in obtaining vitals, administering injections, and collecting and processing
blood and urine specimens, and administer/deliver medication.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions provided by PNP or Physician.
• Ability to provide consultation and educational services to others.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively with others in a professional manner.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work environment is primarily a medical clinic and office environment. Exposure to
bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and needles are present. Travel is involved to
and from Goochland and Powhatan facilities. May involve exposure to aggressive verbal
and physical behavior, and exposure to infectious diseases from others.
