Summary

Performs quality diagnostic and screening breast ultrasound exams and assists with scan for invasive breast procedures, adhering to physician specifications and established protocols. Creates an environment of patient safety and compliance according to the standards established by governing body requirements. Maintains oversight for quality control for equipment. Participates in site and shift rotations, as necessary.

Job Duties

  • Produces quality images for diagnostic and screening ultrasound, which may include screening hand-held or ABUS, using appropriate protocols, positioning, technique selection and supplies. Deviates from normal techniques to optimally visualize the principal area(s) of interest. Communicates with the radiologist or designee.
  • Prepares patients for ultrasound examination by reviewing and confirming orders, collecting history; explaining equipment and testing procedures; helping patient assume physical position for examination.
  • Confirms patient identification, reviews imaging requests and confirms study with patient. Explains procedures and provides education to patients. Documents on imaging and in the EMR as per department protocol.
  • Ensures proper ultrasound equipment operation. Assists in error monitoring, troubleshooting, calling for repairs, assumes responsibility for cleanliness and sanitation of equipment and maintaining supplies.
  • Complies with hospital and department policies and procedures. Completes assigned education modules. Helps maintain MSQA/FDA/ACR compliance, assists with quality control evaluation and/or performance improvement.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Specialized diploma graduate of approved CAHEA school of diagnostic medical sonography/certification program or associate degree in diagnostic medical sonography.
  • Less than one year clinical experience in ultrasound.
  • Ability to initiate, accept and adapt to constant change within a health care environment.
  • Ability to function independently and competently; ability to recognize, analyze and solve a variety of problems.
  • Knowledge necessary to ensure the assessment, treatment and care are appropriate to the age of patients served ranging in age from neonates to geriatrics.
  • Flexibility in work hours and/or sites to meet identified needs. Performs necessary assignments as directed.
  • Maintain quality breast sonography imaging in accordance with ACR and Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
  • RDMS – Reg Diagnostic Medical Sonographer ARDMS (state of Pennsylvania upon hire).
  • RDMS -- Reg Diagnostic Medical Sonographer ARDMS (state of Pennsylvania within 180 days).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (state of Pennsylvania within 60 days).


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography or health care-related field.


Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 pounds. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 pounds. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 pounds of the patient’s weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. Note: Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
