Job Summary:

The Assistant Director is a live-on professional who serves as a central staff member for the Office of Residence Life. In addition to providing guidance, direction, and support for the overall mission, vision, and goals of the residential program at Miami University, this person is responsible for the supervision of 8 – 12 live-in staff members. Like all members of the Office of Residence Life, the Assistant Director is charged with shaping the environment and experiences of students by providing services and programs related to the Office of Residence Life’s Pillars of Success, which include (1) to provide safe and healthy homes, (2) to assist in increasing persistence and retention, (3) to promote inclusive and diverse communities, (4) to extend the learning environment beyond the classroom, and (5) to ease students' transition to adulthood.

 

Duties/Physical Demands:

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, train and evaluate full-time bachelor and master level and part-time graduate level professional staff members
  • Manage crisis and serious incidents in collaboration with supervisees, Resident Assistants, other central staff members, and university resources
  • Communicate regularly with faculty members, academic departments, schools, and colleges to support respective Living Learning Communities
  • Demonstrate cultural competence in race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, and national origin and other areas of diversity
  • Assume leadership of one or more of these initiatives: Resident Assistant Recruitment and Selection, Student Leadership Development, Staff Training and Development, or other departmental initiatives, such as Conduct Liaison
  • Develop and coordinate evaluation and assessment strategies related to assigned organizational initiatives
  • Assist with campus-wide hall openings and closings
  • Support the initiation, planning, and evaluation of programming activities planned by students, community leadership teams, and other organizations
  • Assist with University, divisional, and departmental student retention initiatives
  • Collaborate with other offices and participate in activities geared towards positively affecting student success
  • Teach departmental or divisional related courses (as needed)
  • Refer misconduct incidents to the appropriate University offices
  • Review incident reports and support in-hall staff in response and resolution
  • Integrate knowledge regarding students and their development into daily interactions and activities
  • Serve as a role model for all hall staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors
  • Participate in departmental and divisional professional development activities
  • Chair departmental committees, as assigned
  • Serve as office representative/liaison to other University offices as required
  • Facilitate conflict resolution for students and staff
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members for the Office of Residence Life
  • Interpret and implement Miami University, policies, rules, and procedures
  • Fulfill other general duties assigned by the Office of Residence Life, Division of Student Life and/or Miami University

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree with 3 years post Master’s experience.

 

Desired Qualifications:

Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs.

  • Must have a functional knowledge of word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet usage
