The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Mississippi State University is seeking applicants for a 100% Assistant Teaching Professor (Job # 507254) or Instructor I, II, or III (Job # 507202). The successful candidate for this position will hold a 9-month, non-tenure track appointment with a starting date on or after August 16, 2024. Candidates with a Ph.D. in a related field would qualify for appointment as Assistant Teaching Professor. Candidates with a M.S. degree in a related field would qualify for appointment as Instructor I. A research, service, and/or outreach appointment may be negotiated depending on the skill set and interests of the candidate. The incumbent will work in concert with faculty and staff from the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, other departments and research extension centers located on- and off-campus, and other institutions to deliver educational opportunities in floral design and management.

The successful applicant for this position will teach the equivalent of four courses per semester which may include general floral design laboratories, floral design for special events, postharvest care of floral products, sympathy floral design, etc. The successful candidate will also serve as advisor for the Mississippi State University student chapter of SAIFD. Summer salary may be generated by the successful applicant through external funding or other areas of service depending on availability of funding and needs of the Department and/or College. Active participation in supervising and training graduate students is expected. Service is an integral part of this position and should be in support of the Department, College, professional societies, etc. The successful candidate should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated experience in multiple facets of floral design and plant management, and prior teaching experience.


Earned M.S. (to be appointed as Instructor I) in floral management or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning is required. Students who are ABD will be considered. Familiarity with multiple aspects of floral design and/or flower shop operations as well as horticultural production is preferred but not essential. Prior teaching experience is highly desirable. Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills are important and the willingness to address issues in a team environment. National Floral Accreditation (CFD or AIFD) is desired.
