Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney

The City of Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Office has positions available for Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney. Responsibilities include the prosecution of criminal cases, including felony and misdemeanor offenses in the General District, Juvenile & Domestic Relations and Circuit Courts.

The ACA will be assigned a combination of cases to include misdemeanor offense in the General District Court and felony cases at the Circuit Court levels. Depending prior experience, assignments generally include the prosecution of misdemeanor cases in General District Court (DUI, traffic offenses, and simple drug possession), and the prosecution of less serious felony cases to include non-violent crimes (property crimes, petit and grand larceny, and forgery, etc.). The ACA will prepare and prosecute cases, conduct legal research and argument for hearings, compose appellate briefs, advise local law enforcement agencies, and work closely with victim/witness advocates. As experience, knowledge, and skills are obtained and developed, the ACA will be exposed to increasing responsibility, including more difficult and complex cases.

Candidates must be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of Virginia criminal law and procedure and familiarity with the criminal justice process. Position involves significant legal discretion and the opportunity to use alternatives to incarceration in the appropriate cases. Some work from home flexibility is available. Applicants with prior prosecuting experience are encouraged to apply.

Salary depends upon experience. Positions open until filled.
