Job Description

The Media Studies Program of the Department of Communication & Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Race and Media, beginning in July 2024. The ideal candidate will be a scholar whose research confronts dynamics of race in traditional and digital media environments, and whose scholarship and/or teaching ideally also engages with the intersectionality of race with gender, sexuality, class, and/or disability within those spaces. Candidates for this position would contribute classes to both our undergraduate media studies and film studies programs, as well as theory, methods, and elective offerings within our Master's degree programs in the Humanities and Lifespan Communication & Digital Media.

Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities

Candidates must have the ability to teach courses in Critical Race & Media Studies and two of the following:
  • Media Activism and Social Justice
  • Feminist Media and Cultural Studies
  • Television and Society, New Media and Society
  • Reality Television
  • Media Marketing and Promotion
  • Media History
  • Media Law and Policy
Minimum Qualifications - Education or training

A doctoral degree in Communication, Media Studies, or a complementary field required.

Minimum Qualifications - Special licenses, registration or certification

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with experience teaching at the post-secondary level are preferred.
