Title: Laboratory Technician I (Temporary Part-time)

Pay Rate: $ 16.57 per hour

*If you are a PSCC Student and eligible for the Student Employment Program, you will be paid on experience and the rates are $13.00 (no experience), $14.00 (6 months experience) and $15.00 (9 months experience)*.

Work Hours: 30 hours per week

Position Summary: The overall purpose of this job is to set up the science lab experiments on the Strawberry Plains Campus by obtaining through college channels all supplies, materials, and equipment needed by the faculty and students for the lab experiment and setting these out in an orderly fashion. This includes such things as preparing agar plates, agar tubes, chemicals and reagents for use, preparing chemical solutions, growing bacteria and plants, properly disposing of chemical and biohazard waste, cleaning up after experiments, and making sure equipment is in working order

Duties and Responsibilities:

45% Set up laboratory with required supplies, materials, and equipment; prepare microbiology agar plates and tubes, maintain microbiology cultures, chemical reagents and solutions; and operate various equipment as needed to accomplish these tasks; travel to other branch campuses as needed. Lab setups include the courses BIOL 1010, 1020,1110, 1120, 2010, 2020, 2130, CHEM 1110, and 1120. Additional labs may be added as programs are added to the campus.

20% Clean up lab, including waste disposal, and clean and store equipment.

10% Obtain needed supplies and equipment from Hardin Valley campus or through petty cash system.

10% Communicate lab supply needs to Laboratory Coordinator and other department members or to other departments when necessary, and serve as liaison between lab instructors and course lead instructors.

5% coordinate proper disposal of chemical/biohazard waste, update SDS, test safety equipment.

5% Inventory supplies, check equipment, and perform minor repairs or adjustments on equipment.

5% Assist Laboratory Coordinator in inventory, ordering supplies, waste disposal, and other duties.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a natural science such as chemistry or biology. Lab experience to obtain a natural science degree should be sufficient but additional lab experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Organization and time management skills, attention to detail, ability to troubleshoot lab equipment. Knowledge of OSHA, chemicals, biology and chemistry. The ability to engage in the college's mission and values.
