Faculty/Educational Developer with Teaching for Equity and Inclusion Expertise

Penn State's university-wide center for teaching and learning, the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence (SITE), has an opening for an experienced Faculty/Educational Developer with expertise in teaching for diversity, equity and inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). The person in this position will not focus solely on that area of expertise. All SITE educational developers contribute to the overall mission of the center, as well as to our DEIB strategic goal. However, the person in this position will dedicate more of their time to DEIB than other educational developers, aided by SITE's DEIB graduate assistant.

Examples of SITE's DEIB offerings have included workshops on Culturally Responsive Teaching, Inclusive Teaching, Cultivating Students' Sense of Belonging, Equity and Inclusion in Grading and Assessment, and Trauma-informed Teaching. Candidates do not need to be an expert in each of these topics but should be familiar with them. SITE does not have a fixed DEIB curriculum; offerings will vary based on the needs and interests of Penn State instructors and academic units. SITE hosts a DEIB Leaders group focused on equitable and inclusive teaching, and a self-paced program for faculty who want to delve deeper into teaching for equity and inclusion.

This is a 12-month continuing full-time faculty (non-tenure line) appointment that is an in-person position, with flexibility to work remotely at times. Faculty rank will be commensurate with experience and salary will be dependent upon rank and could range from $65,000-$95,000.

The Schreyer Institute is based at the University Park campus in State College, PA, but is responsible for working with over 6000 full-time faculty and 1500 part-time instructors who teach 85,000+ students at more than 20 different campuses. We also serve a large graduate student population and work closely with academic administrators.

Responsibilities of the Position
  • Consult with faculty from a variety of disciplines on teaching and learning topics, including DEIB.
  • Collaborate with Schreyer Institute faculty consultants to develop and deliver SITE programming.
  • Design and deliver workshops, short-courses, and other teaching and learning programming.
  • Develop materials and resources that encourage the use of effective, evidence-based teaching and assessment strategies, including inclusive and equitable instructional practices.
  • Develop and provide leadership for projects related to SITE's priorities.
  • Extend SITE's outreach to, and personal interactions with, Penn State faculty and administrators
  • Serve as a liaison to designated academic, administrative units, and special interest groups

Academic Expectations of the Position
  • Academic and scholarly competence and credibility
  • Contribute to SITE activities
  • Conduct consultations with faculty, graduate students, and administrators
  • Contribute to Teaching and Learning Scholarship (i.e., SoTL, DBER) or the Scholarship of Educational Development through conference presentations or publications
  • Active participation in national organizations focused on post-secondary teaching and learning

Education and experience:

Candidates must meet the requirements below to be considered for this position.

  • Experience working with faculty from a variety of academic cultures and disciplines
  • Knowledge of diverse student populations and issues faced by those from underrepresented groups
