General Job Description

The Middle School Math Teacher will provide excellent, daily instruction in a Christ-centered environment for his/her students to ensure they meet the academic learning standards for Illinois. This instruction will be completed through a Biblical worldview, growing students in all areas of the curriculum. As a teacher at St. John Lutheran School, educators daily share their faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior and assist students in their own personal walks with Christ. The Teacher will work as a team member with all other personnel of the school and church. Relationships will be characterized by loyalty and cooperation in a common cause and ministry for Christ. The Teacher is accountable to the principal and will report regularly to the principal. For special assignments in the ministry of the congregation, the teacher is accountable to the specific board overseeing the assignment.

Job Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Is responsible for implementing policies adopted by the congregation and the St. John Lutheran School Board.

  • Is responsible for assisting with the special school programs, religious services, projects, and extra-curricular activities which are assigned as duties by the principal.

  • Provides budgetary information to the principal in preparation for the annual budget.

  • Maintains a current inventory of computers, textbooks and other instructional materials.

  • Maintains adequate and timely records of student achievement.

Instruction

  • Understands the subject area content thoroughly, provides instructional services necessary to educate all students to high expectations, and ensures that all students meet Illinois Learning Standards.

  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.

  • Instruct students in proper care and use of materials and equipment.

  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.

  • Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and understandings, and prepare progress reports.

  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.

  • May sponsor exhibits from outside the school.

  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.

  • Communicate with parents on pupil progress.

  • Performs clerical duties, as required, relating to textbooks, instructional supplies, student reports and records, attendance reports, etc.

  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.

  • Develops and uses a long-range plan of instruction.

  • Develops written lesson plans and has them available at all times.

  • Explains and clarifies material in guided practice prior to assigning independent work.

  • Uses varied resources and materials.

  • Uses wholesome motivational techniques.

  • Relates instruction to the Christian objectives of the school.

Classroom Management

  • Responsible for establishing and managing student learning in a positive learning environment while maximizing the time available.

  • Creates a Christ-honoring classroom climate that promotes openness, mutual respect, support, and inquiry.

  • Maintains discipline in the classroom to ensure maximum learning.

  • Implements the school-wide student management policies within classrooms and everywhere on campus.

  • Communicates with parents as needed regarding their student's academic or behavioral status in the class; this includes returning all emails and voicemails within a reasonable amount of time.

  • Establishes and maintains respectful, productive partnerships with families and staff in support of student learning and well-being.

  • Ensures that outside resources align with the Christ-centered, educational mission of SJL.

  • Uses Christian disciplinary methods, using Gospel and Law appropriately.

  • Keeps the classroom interesting, stimulating, neat, and orderly.

Other School Responsibilities

  • Arrives at school at least 30 minutes prior to the start of school and leaves no sooner than 30 minutes after students are dismissed.

  • Is responsible for making reports to parents, written and oral.

  • Attends all faculty meetings as determined by the principal.

  • Attends all teachers' conferences.

  • Attends all Parent-Teacher conferences and meetings.

  • Attends school functions as determined by the principal.

  • Participates and is active in student recruitment and retention efforts.

  • Other duties as assigned by the principal.

Physical Requirements

Indoors 90% of the time; must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time while working with a PC, and must be able to move supplies, copier paper, up to 35 pounds. Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons.

Work Environment

Exposure to outside elements during recess and other duties; Change in temperature/humidity; potential for excessive noise, using computer/monitor screen; Average classroom with exterior windows.


Professional

  • Minimum BA in Education

  • Hold or be eligible to receive an Illinois Professional Education License
  • Holds membership in professional organizations and associations and actively participates in their activities.

  • Is a member of a Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod congregation. Preferred but not required.

  • Rostered by the Missouri Synod if relevant for his/her position, or is able and willing to meet the standards of the colloquy program. Preferred but not required.

  • Has a wholesome parish viewpoint, exhibiting interest in the total educational effort of the congregation.

Personal

  • Associates closely with God through prayer, study of the Bible, and regular communion and church attendance.

  • Evidence of a lifestyle that reflects a dynamic relationship with Christ.

  • Open-minded, tolerant, and happy in his/her outlook on life.
  • Makes a good appearance - Dress and styles are appropriate.
