One-Semester Practitioner-in-Residence, Juvenile Defenders Clinic
This is a temporary appointment as Practitioner in Residence to teach and direct Suffolks Juvenile Defenders Clinic (JDC) during the fall semester. The JDC is a part of Suffolk Law Schools nationally ranked Clinical Programs. This position is ideal for a clinician who wishes to visit in the Boston area for a semester, or for someone with substantial practice experience who wishes to launch or advance a career in clinical legal education under the mentorship of a talented and experienced team of clinicians.
The PIR will teach the 2-credit JDC clinical seminar, as well as supervise 8 clinical students. Students in the JDC advise and directly represent children charged with delinquency offenses in the Boston Juvenile Court. They handle all aspects of delinquency cases from arrangement through trial. Through the seminar, students learn the substantive law related to juvenile and criminal justice, as well as essential lawyering skills like client interviewing and counseling, case theory development, oral advocacy, litigation skills, fact investigation, drafting, and resolving ethical dilemmas in practice. The PIR will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, programs, and conferences on teaching, scholarship, legal education, and other topics.
The PIR will be responsible for managing and overseeing the caseload of the JDC, including handling duty days, case opening and closing procedures, case assignments, review of all student work product, and appearing with students at all hearings and major case-related events.
The PIR will be directly supervised by the Associate Dean for Experiential Learning.
Hours and Duration: The position will begin during the summer of 2023 so that the PIR can prepare for the fall semester. This is a full-time, temporary position ending on December 31, 2023. There is no possibility of renewal.
