Job Summary

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Paralegal is responsible for providing paralegal and administrative assistance to the Legal department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Performance Requirements*
  • Gathers, reviews, organizes, and prepares documents for mediation, litigation, outside counsel investigations, state and federal agency charges of discrimination, and internal grievance proceedings
  • Assists the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel with legal matters, including performing legal research, calendaring deadlines, coordinating scheduled legal and investigative proceedings with outside counsel
  • Reviews and prepares responses to discovery requests and subpoenas in coordination with the General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, and outside counsel
  • Assists the General Counsel by maintaining, updating, and monitoring the legal and litigation calendar
  • Maintains communication with Courts and related offices as needed
  • Files documents with Courts and state and federal agencies as needed
  • Assists and serves as a back up for the Public Information Officer in responding to Public Information Act requests and drafting exception requests to the Attorney General's Office
  • Provides assistance and coverage for the Executive Legal Assistant as needed
  • Assists in managing legal and investigative matters assigned to outside counsel
  • Drafts agreements, resolutions, regulations, policies and other legal documents under the supervision of the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel
  • Attends various legal proceedings with the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel, including depositions, hearings, mediations, and trials as needed
  • Participates in training programs with College faculty and staff, including new employee orientation, to limit exposure to liability and educate faculty and staff on key College policies and procedures
Service Excellence
  • Participates on behalf of the College in external community organizations and associations as assigned to support the essential performance requirements
  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
  • Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of the College
Supervision

Works under the supervision of the General Counsel

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or sixty (60) college hours completed
  • Five (5) years' working experience related to the Essential Performance Requirements
  • Paralegal certification from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved Paralegal Education Program
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least one (1) year's working experience in a higher education environment
  • At least one (1) year's active participation in professional and community organizations, reflecting a commitment to professional development and community service
  • At least one (1) year's working experience with the eDiscovery process
  • Current Texas Board of Legal Specialization (“TBLS") certification
  • Current Certified Paralegal (CP) or Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP) certification from National Association of Legal Assistant (“NALA”)
  • Current Registered Paralegal (RP) or Core Registered Paralegal (CRP) with the National Federation of Paralegals Association, Inc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Westlaw or similar legal research software
  • Skilled in superior written and oral communication
  • Skilled using computerized applications and enterprise systems, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
  • Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal relationships
  • Skilled in detail management and organizing files, information, documents, and activities
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and in crisis situations, managing varied and unpredictable workloads efficiently while maintaining a professional attitude
  • Ability to foster collaboration and build consensus
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a dynamic team
  • Ability to use critical thinking to evaluate and organize documents for mediation, litigation, investigations, state and federal agency inquiries, and internal grievance proceedings
