Job Purpose
Tennessee Tech University's Police Department is a professional law enforcement agency dedicated to the protection and security of the university community. TTU's University Police support the educational mission of the university through maintaining an environment conducive to learning.

The University Police Department fosters cooperation among its officers and staff, residence hall staff members, university employees and students to enhance the campus' overall safety and security. The campus community, made up of over 10,000 students and 1,585 employees, looks to the professionally trained University Police Department for a variety of services, including law enforcement, traffic regulations, crime prevention, and safety training.

Essential Functions
Serve on the Student Affairs Leadership Team. Supervise the police operations, which provide adequate traffic flow, enforcement of traffic regulations, transportation of large sums of cash, investigations, and security of campus buildings. Recruits, hires, trains and supervises departmental staff—officers, dispatchers, administrative associates, etc. Ensures reports and investigations are conducted properly. Plans and provides security and police services for special events on campus. Plans for and furnishes security for all students housed on campus. Ensures coordination with appropriate University personnel regarding incidents involving individual students and student organizations. Ensures police officers are adequately trained regarding laws, court procedures, and University regulations. Develops and manages the budget for the department. Ensure fiscal responsibility is exercised appropriately. Reviews and monitors overtime for officers. Serves on the Threat Assessment Team; reviews cases and collaborates on plan of action to mitigate the threat of violence to campus. Works collaboratively with the Compliance Office, Environmental Health & Safety, and Emergency Management staff. Maintains knowledge of federal and state laws. Liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement and emergency services. Serve on the CARE Team and works closely with the Dean of Students to identify and provide support and resources to students of concern. Work with the AVP for Strategic Initiatives to establish an assessment plan for the University Police Department; actively engage staff to implement and monitor ongoing assessment and strategic planning efforts. Keeps VPSA abreast of all major concerns through ongoing communications. Works collaboratively with the VPSA and administration to resolve high-level issues. Works toward accreditation standards for the department (state and national); advocates for resources to acquire accreditation as needed. May assist with policy development and/or changes. Participate in professional development opportunities to remain abreast of current trends and issues. Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with at least 10 years of law enforcement experience including 3 years of experience in a supervisory role OR 12 years of law enforcement experience including 3 years of experience in a supervisory role in lieu of the degree. Meet the required standards for Peace Officers and be POST Certified. Effective written and oral communication skills for report writing, addressing students, employees, and the public. Student centered with the ability to create a welcoming environment for our diverse faculty, staff and students. Ability to handle information in a sensitive and confidential manner, to follow standard operating procedures, and to make good judgment decisions.

Preferred Qualifications
Five years in a university police department. Emergency Management or First Responder Certification.

Work Hours: Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience. Administrative Pay Grade M4 - 16.
