Environmental Reporter
The Bellingham Herald in Whatcom County, Wash., is looking for a smart, energetic journalist to discover and cover environmental news across our mountainous, coastal community just south of British Columbia, Canada.
As an environmental reporter, you will cover daily and trend stories that are relevant to Whatcom County readers, including in the areas of climate change, natural resources and community growth.
We’re looking for an organized reporter who can spot and report multiple stories in a week and who can cultivate reliable sources. We are also looking for a collaborative journalist who wants to contribute to a team.
The expected schedule is Monday through Friday, but will vary depending on news needs.
Environmental Reporter Responsibilities:

Be able to produce fast-moving, highly readable stories while also working on in-depth, topical stories.

Use SEO smartly and strategically; understanding other audience growth processes.

Understand and use audience metrics to help increase readership.

Use data and research to inform reporting.

Skillful at public records and the ability to use and develop databases for revelatory reporting.

Shoot photos and video when needed.

Skillfully use content management systems.

Use social media platforms to find stories and sources, help distribute and highlight work.
Requirements:

College degree required.

Reporters with a year or more of successful news experience will be most comfortable in this role.

Solid news judgment and excellent journalism ethics.

An intuitive sense of what’s important and interesting to audiences on all platforms.

A deep curiosity and high energy.

The ability to write quickly, accurately and engagingly on a wide variety of topics.

A commitment to diverse coverage through community engagement and source building.

A collaborative work ethic and the ability to communicate easily with people around the office and across the company.

Proficient knowledge of technology including content management systems and storytelling tools.

Ability to quickly and accurately research and verify the authenticity of information, sources, photos and video.

Must have reliable transportation.

Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).
