The University of Mary Washington is seeking a Access Consultant. The Access Consultant is responsible for coordinating supports through work with instructional faculty/staff and students to provide assistance in meeting accommodation needs of students with disabilities. This position must have strong understanding of disability and will provide support to a variety of students with disabilities, including neurological, learning, ADHD, psychological, health-related, and physical disabilities.

 

Required KSAs / Competencies / Qualifications to successfully perform their work

Ability to work with confidential, highly sensitive information and interpret medical and psychological documentation for eligibility for accommodations

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to embrace, utilize, and master new technology.

Ability to interact with diverse groups of students, parents, faculty and staff

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to have a flexible work schedule

Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2009, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and other federal and state laws pertaining to higher education and disability services

 

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Disability Studies, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Guidance Counseling, Higher Education Student Affairs, or related field or equivalent training / experience.

 

 

Required Experience

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and the willingness to learn the campus computer software for student information and other administrative systems
• Excellent organizational skills
• Responsibilities involving the handling of confidential and sensitive information
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, parents, faculty, and staff from a broad range of programs and disciplines

 

 

Preferred Education

Master’s Degree in Disability Studies, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Guidance Counseling, Higher Education Student Affairs, or related field

 

 

Preferred Experience

• Perform administrative duties as needed, including back up testing support
• Proficiency in Accommodate by Symplicity System
• At least one (1) year of disability-related experience in higher education support services
• Experience in the Concepts of Universal Design for Instruction and the Social Model of Disability
• Demonstrated knowledge, training or experience in State and Federal laws related to Disability Rights: ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508, ADAAA and their application to higher education
