High School Equivalency Program (HEP)
University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) at Sacramento State is seeking a HEP Instructor for the High School Equivalency Program (HEP). HEP is one of fifty federally funded educational programs nationwide designed to assist migrant and seasonal agricultural workers and their families to obtain the equivalent of a high school diploma. HEP also helps students prepare to move on to higher levels of education or training and into more stable and better-paid forms of employment.
RATE OF PAY: $20.17 - $30.25 per hour

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is a full-time, non-exempt (eligible for overtime pay), benefited position, with a defined contribution retirement plan through TIAA. (The position is not covered under the California Public Employees’ Retirement System.) Continued employment in this position is dependent upon funding and the mutual consent of University Enterprises and the employee, and either University Enterprises or the employee, can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Program continuation is contingent upon funding.
Sacramento State requires all campus employees, including auxiliary employees, to be fully vaccinated, including a booster, against COVID-19 unless they have a qualifying exemption.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
2. Demonstrated classroom experience with minority students.
3. Demonstrated experience in assessing students’ academic needs.
4. Experience with the unique cultural traits found in migrant and farm working communities.
5. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish.
6. Demonstrated familiarity with word processing and computer applications, such as the programs in the Microsoft Office Suite.
7. Excellent group presentation skills.
8. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers, students, parents, faculty, and staff.
9. Must be fingerprinted and pass a background check. Must continue to meet the established standards.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master’s Degree in Education or related field or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
2. Demonstrated experience teaching in public schools.
3. Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position is responsible for facilitating high school equivalency instruction, assessment, recruitment, and record-keeping of a HEP class. The position will facilitate classes online and may be expected to facilitate in person. The position reports directly to and receives general supervision from the HEP Director or designee.
The specific duties and responsibilities are as follows:
1. Performs orientations for all incoming students. Orientations include a presentation, welcoming students, and setting expectations for the class.
2. Facilitates instruction in social studies, science, reading, mathematics, and writing. Prepares and develops materials and lesson plans.
3. Assesses incoming students for academic achievement and administers practice tests as appropriate. Creates individual academic plans (IAPs) for incoming and current students.
4. Integrates study skills and job search skills into the study program.
5. Maintains IAPs on each students’ progress and updates IAPs weekly. Works with other HEP staff in the maintenance of information regarding job and college placement and locally available health resources.
6. Meets regularly with each student and evaluates students’ progress.
7. Identifies and directs students to health, psychological, and professional counseling as needed and maintains a file of all referrals.
8. Works with Enrollment and Admissions Specialist and Outreach and Recruitment Specialist as necessary to facilitate recruitment and enrollment.
9. Works with Career Specialist and other agency representatives, as necessary, to facilitate continuing education of HEP graduates.
10. Assists HEP Director in creating and maintaining collaborations with educational and vocational institutions in the area.
11. Assists HEP Director in the selection of field trips and visiting speakers.
12. Collaborates with other staff to maintain and update curriculum and teacher handbook.
13. Assists HEP Director in making public presentations on behalf of the program and collaborating programs.
14. Participates in HEP recruitment activities such as educational fairs, faith-based organizations, and other recruiting venues.
15. Participates in the annual HEP graduation ceremony, including set-up and clean-up.
16. Participates in regular staff meetings including, but not limited to, special staff development activities.
17. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director to ensure the success of the program and its participants.
Note: This position vacancy is with University Enterprises Inc., an auxiliary organization of California State University, Sacramento. This is not a University position; the incumbent will be an employee of University Enterprises. University Enterprises operates commercial enterprises on the California State University, Sacramento campus; it is responsible for grant and contract management and fiscal services for University research and sponsored programs and provides fiscal services to University related agencies and activities.
