Job Description Summary:
The Research Development Manager will support the University of Kansas Medical Center's (KUMC) Research Development Office (RDO) by providing centralized support with coordinating applications, e.g., for training grant funding, and assistance with other proposals under RDO's purview. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for the pre-award portion of lifecycle support. Duties will include coordination with KUMC's Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA), plus developing and providing training grant application education to principal investigators (PIs) and department administrative staff. The position will be responsible for implementing processes and procedures that reduce barriers and administrative burden to incentivize PIs in applying for new training grants, as well as collecting and maintaining data around KUMC's training grant projects and trainees.

Starting salary will begin at $72,000 and is commensurate with experience.

Job Description:

Condition of Employment: Must have current certification as either CRA®, CPRA®, or CFRA or obtain certification within a year of hire date.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Work Experience: 3 years of experience of research proposal development in an academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications
Education and Certifications: Master's degree in a relevant field.

Work Experience:
  • 4 or more years of experience of research proposal development in an academic setting.
  • Experience with proposal preparation and award management.
  • Experience working in an academic medical setting.
  • Experience conducting research development training or workshops.

Skills:
  • Proficiency in research management systems, grant management software, and data analytics tools.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and influence outcomes.
  • Attention to detail and ability to proactively make decisions and execute tasks/projects within a complex environment with minimal supervision.
  • Competence in personal computing and intermediate competence in the use of Microsoft Office software.
  • In-depth knowledge of research funding agencies, grant programs, and the grant application process.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders, including researchers, faculty, funding agencies, and industry partners.


Job Duties

Manage the KUMC training grant proposal preparation and efforts:
  • Create and coordinate training tables (xTrain within NIH eRA Commons).
  • Create and maintain institutional support documents and sections.
  • Educate administrative professionals and PIs on training grant proposal preparation/support.
  • Liaison between SPA and Research Development Office for training grant proposals and awards
  • Collaborate with other offices in gathering necessary data where needed, while managing the overall timelines and flow of the specific proposal information.


Lead the promotion and recruitment efforts for training grant opportunities:
  • Create and maintain a streamlined centralized location for all training grant opportunities.
  • Create and distribute information and provide training on submission requirements to help educate interested faculty and support staff.
  • Develop and deploy strategies to ensure a diverse candidate pool for training grant opportunities.
  • Streamline the training grant application process.
  • Network and share opportunities with others


Create, manage, and regularly inspect systems and processes for thoroughness and efficiency to track and report on training grant-specific metrics, including, but not limited to:
  • Graduate student and postdoctoral fellow outcomes.
  • Be a resource for campus colleagues' questions and data needs regarding current and awarded grant information.
  • Number of faculty on training grants.
  • Number of NIH-supported trainees.
  • Postdoctoral fellow candidate pool demographic data.
  • Training requirements for awardees.


Track, distribute and train on updated NIH policy statements and/or changes impacting training grants to relevant parties.

Contribute as appropriate to other Research Development Office projects and initiatives.

Manage and update databases, spreadsheets, workflows, and assessment plans as needed.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
