General Description of Position: The Associate Vice President for Facilities Services is the senior facilities administrator at the University of Mary Washington. Reporting to the Vice President for Administration and Finance and CFO, the AVP is responsible for the successful operation, maintenance, and development of the university's physical plant. The AVP provides leadership for the following departments and programs: Capital Outlay, Plant Operations and Contract Services, Maintenance Services, Landscape and Grounds, Utilities Management, Central Storeroom/Surplus Property, Unit Financial and Administrative Services, Storm Water Management, Environmental Stewardship, and Snow and Ice Management.
The AVP engages collaboratively with the university administration and campus community on a variety of campus construction and renovation projects and provides leadership in campus master plan development, multi-year construction and renovation planning, and development of state funding requests.
The successful candidate will have a wide range of facilities and operations experience and a record of innovative problem-solving, streamlining processes and systems, delivering large capital projects on time and on budget, and effectively managing employees in a higher education setting.
Required KSAs / Competencies:
- Comprehensive knowledge of facility planning, design and construction including maintenance, repair, renovation, and new construction.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of principles, practices, and procedures of public institutions as well as federal and state regulatory requirements as related to facility maintenance.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of life cycle and equipment and facilities replacement planning and schedules.
- Able to function in a complex, regulatory environment.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret and apply standards, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written formats using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts and feedback.
- Ability to convey complex information to a variety of audiences; excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
- Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress and craft appropriate responses to situations while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Skill in effective leadership of adults including coaching, evaluation, and team-building. Demonstrated successful leadership and organizational team management experience.
- Must be able to respond to on-call emergencies 24/7.
Required Experience: Five or more years in construction management and building maintenance fields. Progressive experience in senior leadership, executive, or managerial role in higher education setting or equivalent public or private sector organization with oversight of facility operations and maintenance.
Required Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, construction management, industrial technology or related management field.
