Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Undergraduate Education and Faculty Affairs (UEFA) unit at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for a position as a 50% time appointment as Associate Director of Community-Based Learning and Scholarship (CBLS), starting July 2024. The position requires knowledge of and expertise in community-based learning and/or service learning in teaching, research, and service contexts. The candidate will help lead CBLS initiatives within academic affairs and will work collaboratively with multiple CBLS-affiliated units across campus to achieve the goals of the unit and campus.

In addition to working collaboratively with the Director of High Impact Pathways on applied learning and high impact practices (HIPs), the Associate Director of CBLS will be engaged in the following responsibilities:
  • Lead the application and work for UNCW's Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement;
  • Support UNCW faculty involvement with North Carolina Campus Engagement (NCCE), including attendance at meetings and conferences, disseminating resources and opportunities to UNCW campus, connecting faculty to collaborative opportunities through NC network;
  • Co-lead Community Engagement and Partnerships Council in collaboration with Director of SCE (Dr. Jaime Russell);
  • Establish and sustain collaborations with CBLS-related units including Student Community Engagement (SCE), college-level CE representation, GivePulse coordinator, and community partners;
  • Hire, supervise, and engage CBLS faculty fellows;
  • Support development of resources and trainings related to faculty engagement with curricular-based community-engaged learning experiences and service-learning;
  • Support existing funded initiatives and facilitate external funding/grants to support collaborative initiatives (e.g., SECU Public Fellows Internship Program);
  • Develop online resources to support CBLS including website and Canvas sites;
  • Facilitate CE grants (internal funding) through providing orientations, ongoing support, and assessment, and reporting on funded CE projects;
  • Facilitate CE awards process including request for nominations, review process, and notification of awardees;
  • Develop, publish, and distribute a collaborative communication/calendar of CE events for the University;
  • Support editors of the Undergraduate Journal of Service-Learning and Community Based Research (UJSLCBR) including service as member of the editorial board and promotion of engagement with the journal at UNCW and beyond;
  • Maintain GivePulse and related CBLS contracts;
  • Serve as BOT and Faculty Senate representative for CEP;
  • Liaise with the Work-based Learning Council (Career Center);
  • Facilitate the collective vision approved by the Council;
  • Serve as point-of-contact for partnership agreements and student waivers, coordinates with colleges/schools;
  • Coordinate and oversee best practices in risk management for Community Engaged Learning experiences, including waiver processes;
  • Develop strategic plan for unit that includes creating a sustainable system for connecting faculty and students with community partners using virtual, hybrid, and in-person modalities;
  • Reporting on CBLS for accreditation or certification by outside bodies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Terminal degree in an academic discipline from an accredited institution
  • Tenured faculty member at rank of Associate or Full Professor at UNCW
  • Familiarity and experience with community-based learning and/or service learning in higher education
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate:
  • Effective teaching of CLBS-related courses
  • Engagement in CBLS-related research and scholarship
  • Evidence of effectiveness in campus and community partnerships
  • Leadership experience in an academic unit and/or CBLS-related initiatives
