Job Description Summary

Penn Carey Law staff play a critical role in providing a world-class educational environment, supporting faculty, students, alumni, and fellow staff members in a collaborative and ambitious environment. The Director of Public Interest Career Strategy and Counseling creates and implements strategic approaches to preparing students to succeed in the highly competitive public sector marketplace, oversees the development and delivery of public sector career education, manages and directs recruitment programs and events, and leads the provision of counseling services to students. This role requires significant collaboration and strong relationships with partners within the Office of Career Strategy, throughout the law school, and with legal employers, donors and alumni.
The Director holds a regular full-time position and reports to the Associate Dean and Executive Director of Career Strategy and works in close collaboration with the Director, Public Interest Fellowships and Government Career Pathways. This is a regular full-time position and eligible for hybrid work schedule.
Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Lead Career Strategy Programs
As a strategic leader, oversee the design and development of programs, services and resources to best support the public sector career aspirations of PCL students and alumni. This spans all public sector careers, including not for profit, government and judicial opportunities, within the U.S. and around the world.
Develop and maintain expertise of public sector legal careers, including practice areas, employers, geographic markets, selection practices and hiring trends for these opportunities.
Develop strategies to identify, reach and serve all students with public sector career aspirations, including those with public sector employment commitments relating to law school scholarships. In collaboration with OCS colleagues and law school partners, ensure support for students in their development of fulsome career strategies, including identifying foundational practice experiences, developing employer and legal community relationships, and successfully competing for summer and post graduate employment.
Understand the needs and interests of students who seek to launch their careers with law firm employment, while also incorporating public sector work into their initial and/or future career goals. Provide education and other resources on career strategies that begin in law school and support graduates throughout their legal careers.
Partner with OCS colleagues and other law school departments and external peers to ensure best practices for program design and content. Develop and implement practices and tools to communicate events and measure program success. Embrace innovation, technology and user focused design tools to maximize the quality and success of programs, services and resources.
Manage technology resources relating to public sector information and events, including Canvas courses, OCS website, Symplicity and social media.
Lead OCIs & Job Fairs
Lead the design, development and implementation of internal (Penn Carey Law specific) and external structured recruiting programs to ensure exceptional access to public sector job opportunities.
Identify best practices for robust recruiting programs and ensure best in class offerings for our students. Manage relationships with partner schools and participating employers.
Design and oversee public sector OCS-sponsored interview programs, currently offered in the fall and spring. Proactively identify and recruit employer participation to align with student career interests and maximize career development and employment success.
Identify appropriate external interview programs and job fairs for Penn Carey Law participation. Support students in applying and participating in these programs. Represent and serve as liaison for PCL as appropriate for such programs.
Oversee tactical implementation of recruiting programs and ensure successful student outcomes and a positive student and employer experience.
Leverage communication tools to maximize recruiting program participation of students seeking public sector opportunities. Measure program success and report on outcomes.
Counsel students on public interest career strategy
Develop and oversee the vision and strategy of public sector career counseling, in collaboration with OCS colleagues, to develop and deliver exceptional and individualized counseling to students seeking public sector careers upon graduation, as well as those who are interested in incorporating public interest work into other practice pursuits or later in their careers.
Provide highly individualized career counseling and coaching to students based on specific needs and interests and for all aspects of career strategy, including practices, employers, recruiting, networking, application and interview preparation.
Ensure excellent career counseling services, by developing and maintaining expertise relating to public sector legal careers (e.g. practice areas, advocacy models, employers, and geographic markets), selection and hiring practices and trends for these opportunities. Collaborate with the Director, Public Interest Fellowships and Government Career Pathways, and Director of Counseling to share best practices and ensure an integrated approach.
Educate OCS colleagues on public sector careers, paths, programs and resources and support integrated counseling for students with varied career interests including public sector, multi-sector and cross disciplinary interests.
Collaborate with OCS colleagues with responsibility for alumni, clerkships and international career advising to advise and coach alumni in pursuing public sector career goals.
Communication, Reporting, Representation
Communicate the mission, vision, values of PCL as a leader in developing talented public sector attorneys and facilitating their successful career outcomes.
Ensure excellent systems are deployed and consistently maintained to capture data about student interests, success in law school and post graduation career movement.
Measure and communicate results of data collection relating to programs, services and outcomes to OCS colleagues, OCS and law school leadership and other partners. In collaboration with OCS leadership, respond to requests for information relating to public sector career strategy services and graduate outcomes.
Build and maintain strong relationships with law school partners, industry associations, peer schools and employers. Represent OCS in internal partnerships with TPIC, DAR, E&I. Represent OCS and Penn Carey Law as a member and leader of professional associations, including NALP, EJW, bar associations.
Management and Operational Leadership
Working in collaboration with the Director of Public Interest Career Strategy & Counseling develop annual report and strategic plan for all public sector career programs and services. Manage expenses and make annual budget recommendations.
Manage all work performed in support of these programs and services by administrative OCS staff members and student workers. Support their development and success by providing performance feedback directly, as well as to their managers. Hire a GSE intern and serve as the primary mentor for this individual.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree, J.D. strongly preferred, and have a minimum of five to seven years of progressively increasing responsibility as a public interest lawyer and/or academic administrator. Experience working with law students and/or an interest in higher education preferred. The candidate will have a history of working successfully with diverse constituencies, including employers, faculty, alumni, current students, prospective students, and colleagues. We seek candidates who have established track records as collaborators in the workplace.
