Bioinformatics Supervisor



Under the general direction of the manager or Clinical Genomics department head VP, Clinical Genomics, the Bioinformatics Supervisor supervises the day to day operation of individual contributors with in the Bioinformatics Team of the Genome Center. Evaluates client requests and manages resource assignments to clinical and research projects. Monitors and manages vendor relationships. Provides support for development, validation, and operational management of the team's deliverables.

Experience in healthcare related industries preferred. Those with relevant experience in other industries will be considered.
Professional hands-on experience of large-scale bioinformatics analyses.
Extensive knowledge of bioinformatics algorithms and industry developments and dynamics.
Proficient understanding of clinical lab industry.
Proficient understanding of molecular methodologies and how they relate to client requests.
Proficient in cloud computing and utilization for genomic data management.
Superior computer skills: programming experience in Python, R, and Perl. Scripting proficiency in Unix/Linux.
Experience in next-generation sequencing analysis.
Experience in clinical pipeline validations and reporting.
Experience in developing, standardizing, and validation computational pipelines and algorithms for clinical and research genomic analysis.
Person must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm, and initiative on a daily basis.
Will manage multiple tasks and projects and forge strong interpersonal relationships with other teams and external audience.
Attention to detail is critical to the success of the position, with demonstrated competency in client orientation and the ability to deal with ambiguity.
Excellent planning, documentation, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

Job Summary

Manages team and oversees the entire analytics lifecycle, including data collection, preparation, advanced analysis, and modeling. Leads the design, deployment, and maintenance of data models, dashboards, and visualizations. Identifies analytical strategies, cost reduction opportunities, and performance enhancements. Serves as a point of contact for customers and staff. Assists in establishing best practice standards, monitors data quality, and prepares complex reports for senior leadership.


Essential Functions

Team Administration: supervises a team of bioinformaticians, variant scientists, software engineers, and data scientists as part of the Genome Center. Completes performance evaluations and coaches/mentors staff.
Manages team member assignment and client communications for bioinformatics services.
Manages training, competency evaluations, and assignment schedule of bioinformatics team members.
Ability to successfully supervise a team of bioinformaticians to deliver on time and within budget.
Ability to make decisions or recommendations based on various types and amounts of information.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to other managers and department leaders.

Clinical Lab Specific: assures quality of information through validation testing, validation report generation, and team member training.
Creates Standard Operating Procedures that adhere to regulatory guidelines and recommendations.
Responsible for the team's alignment to regulatory requirements.
Guides the team to create clinical reports at requested turn-around-times.
Creates and applies process improvements to increase product and service quality to achieve business objectives.
Works with Genome Center team, clients and vendors to evaluate, develop, implement, and validate bioinformatics solutions.
Ability to interpret and summarize results of various analyses in a timely and meaningful way.
Ability to re-engineer processes to positively impact productivity in terms of timeliness and accuracy.

Monitors version upgrades and vendor relationships including license agreements. Oversees and manages documentation of developmental efforts.
