The School of Natural Resources in the University of Tennessee Herbert College of Agriculture is seeking a Lecturer of Outdoor Recreation and Park Management to establish a nationally recognized program in outdoor recreation and park management. This is a 9-month, non-tenure track, regular, faculty position. The position supports the undergraduate BS program in Forestry with a concentration in Outdoor Recreation and Park Management (ORPM) and contributes to a robust teaching program in outdoor recreation and park management. The Outdoor Recreation and Park Management concentration in the School of Natural Resources is new to the University of Tennessee. This is an exciting opportunity to build a new program from the ground up and have significant input in how the concentration operates. This position is located on the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture campus in Knoxville, Tennessee, requiring work to be performed on employer premises or designated assignment location. The School of Natural Resources is the comprehensive natural resources program in the state, consisting of 32 teaching, research, and extension faculty; 14 professional and 9 administrative staff members, and more than 350 students. The school's mission is to advance the science and sustainable management of natural resources to promote their health, utilization, and appreciation in Tennessee, the region, and beyond, through programs in teaching, research, Extension and outreach. Duties and Responsibilities of the Position Include:
• Serving as a Lecturer in the Forestry major, specifically in the ORPM concentration
• Teaching three to four courses per semester in the ORPM concentration at the undergraduate level on topics such as management, leadership, planning, ecotourism, access and participation in outdoor recreation, commercial recreation, interpretation, and internship, according to applicant background and expertise.
• Developing, promoting, and growing the ORPM concentration and developing collaborative relationships with external park and recreation partners such as state and federal agencies, community agencies and planners, non-profit organizations, and private industry.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
• A post-baccalaureate degree (e.g., M.S.), preferably in outdoor recreation, park and natural resource management, or related field by the appointment. Professional experience in outdoor recreation or park management may substitute for the degree.
• Ability to provide excellent teaching.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• The ability to work as a member of diverse multidisciplinary teams, including stakeholders.
• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.
Preferred Qualifications:
• A Ph.D. in outdoor recreation, park and natural resource management, or related field.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues, industry, and professional associations and organizations.
• The ability to offer professional certifications, e.g., Wilderness First Responder, Swiftwater Rescue, Leave No Trace.
