Job Summary

Under minimal supervision will help prepare financial reports for component units, cultural entities, as well as the University's annual consolidated report. In addition, will work with departments and component units to prepare other required monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. Participates in developing and implementing new processes and procedures related to GASB pronouncements. Acts as a catalyst between the department and its customers and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service and care. May supervise staff.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare or assist in preparation of all required annual financial reports.
  • Work with the University of Utah Research Foundation (UURF) and assigned department manager to prepare budgets, variance analysis, and cash position documents for sub-committee and board meetings.
  • Oversee and/or prepare all required monthly, quarterly, and annual reports such as bond disclosures, Moody's and S&P disclosures, investment reports, etc.
  • Work with Associate Director of Financial Reporting and Accounting (AD) and Associate Controller to create and implement processes for new Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements.
  • Support set up and maintenance of chart fields and general ledger structure.
  • Work with AD and Associate Controller to help onboard new component units and/or other associated service organizations.
  • Partner with the training team to facilitate training for finance staff across the university.
  • Respond to external auditor's questions/requests in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work with AD on existing processes and make suggestions and/or changes to improve efficiencies within Financial Reporting

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.

Preferences
  • CPA license is strongly preferred. Candidates who are CPA-eligible, per the State of Utah Division of Occupational Licensing rules, and are willing to sit for the exams may be considered.
  • Experience in preparing and/or reviewing financial statements
  • Prior experience reading and interpreting Financial Accounting Standards Board or GASB rules and guidelines
