The Mary and Frances Youth Center (MFYC) on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University offers afterschool and summer enrichment programs for elementary and middle school age youth that focuses on character development, future orientation, tennis and other sports. The MFYC will offer nine weeks of summer camp to youth ages 7-14. A camp counselor is responsible for being an active part of all camp activities to include team building, swimming, life skills lessons and a variety of sports. Camp staff are the most important person in a camper's life, and this job should not to be taken lightly. The most successful staff are those who are able to manage multiple priorities, create fun in an instant, maintain high energy and serve as a positive role model in camper's lives.

The Opportunity

Job Responsibilities :

· Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers

· Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff

· Collaborate with summer camp staff to implement all facets of camp

· Participate in implementation of program activities for campers:

· Lead/co-lead daily activities lessons (art, nutrition, career/college exploration)

· Lead team building games to facilitate connection

· Assist in serving meals to students during lunch each day

· Lead sports lessons (training provided)

· Swim daily (during certain weeks) with campers and manager youth in locker rooms

· Provide additional support to the program staff as necessary

Qualifications :

· At least 18 years of age with experience and desire to work with children; specially in after school, summer or classroom settings

· Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with staff, parents and volunteers

· Proven ability to maintain high levels of endurance, positive attitude and leadership abilities

· Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-motivator, responsible and adaptability

· Experience teaching tennis and other sports related games for youth preferred

· Physical Requirements of the Job:

· Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and withstand daily exposure to sun and heat.

· Willing to work in a camp setting; inside and outside

· Willingness to swim appropriately with the youth, no fear of the water

· Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

This is a 10 week position starting on May 28th and ending on August 9th. Applicants must be able to commit to seven out of the 10 weeks.

Salary Range: $13 - $14/hr depending on experience
