Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic's most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region's future cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasingly mandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery. The division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty staff and students.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University/VCU Health System is actively recruiting for a full-time cardiac surgeon. This position is an open rank, term, non-tenure track faculty position. Duties will include clinical responsibilities in all areas of advanced cardiac surgery, especially in the care of patients with advanced heart failure requiring mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation.

Position Responsibilities:

Clinical
Clinical duties will include all areas of advanced cardiac surgery, especially in the care of patients with advanced heart failure requiring mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation.

Teaching
The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities including formal lectures and case presentations to undergraduate medical students, housestaff, and junior faculty encompassing all areas of cardiac surgery.

Research
Pursuing professional career in clinical and bench research is expected. Opportunities for intramural and extramural funding will be explored with a goal towards extramural funding. Collaboration with basic science research faculty in the School of Medicine is required.

Service
Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. Their clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.

Required Qualifications:
  • Board certified/eligible in thoracic surgery
  • Virginia state medical licensure
  • Minimum 3 years clinical experience in advanced cardiac surgery
  • Training in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support devices and transplantation is required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
  • Commitment to clinical excellence, education and research
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Research Interests in cardiovascular disorders that can lead to intramural and extramural funding
  • Proficient in the conduct of advanced adult cardiac surgery procedures
  • Training in adult congenital heart surgery
  • Basic and/or clinical research experience
