Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Laboratory Research Technician to join our dynamic team at Virginia Commonwealth University. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing our research projects focused on vaccine and diagnostic assay develop for tick-borne and zoonotic infections. This position requires a strong background in molecular biology and immunology with direct experience with protein purification (FPLC and HPLC), animal handling (mice and rats), cultivation of bacteria (intracellular and extracellular pathogens), SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting, ELISAs, microscopy (Dark-field), genetic manipulation of the Lyme disease spirochetes, and PCR.

Core Responsibilities:

1.) Protein Purification
  • Transform plasmids into E. coli
  • Induce protein production
  • Purify proteins using HPLC, FPLC, SEC or gravity flow chromatography
2.) Animal Handling
  • Immunize mice by subQ, IP or IM routes
  • Dissection
3.) Immunological Assays
  • ELISA
  • Immunoblots
  • IFA
4.) Bacterial and Cell Line Cultivation
  • Maintain bacterial cultures and mammalian cell lines
5.) Molecular Techniques
  • PCR
  • Cloning
  • DNA isolation
  • Genetic manipulation of spirochetes
Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • MS degree with 1+ years of experience post-graduation
  • Must have demonstrated experience with all procedures listed above
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience working with Borreliella burgdorferi, Leptopsira spp., and Ehrlichia spp
