Summary:
A Residential Life and Housing (RLH) Conference Assistant (CA) at VCU facilitates a safe and inclusive
living environment in the residence hall by acting as a liaison between VCU summer housing residents
and conference guests with University administration. CAs are expected to uphold and demonstrate a
commitment to RLH values: Collaboration, Inclusion & Diversity, Resident Centered, Learning, and
Excellence. CAs enhance each housing guest's experience through quality customer service, policy
education and enforcement, conflict management, maintaining community presence, and role modeling
good conduct and positive contributions to the residential community.
The CA reports directly to the Conference Services Coordinator. The primary responsibilities of this
position are: serving as the liaison between each conference that visits VCU and the Summer Conference
Team to ensure that each conference runs smoothly, and serving as the representative for Conference
Services in the residence halls for our guests. The CA will work an average of 29 hours per week and is
required to live on campus in an assigned residence hall. The CA position will require night and weekend
work to include on duty and on call overnight. The CA will work March 10th through August 24th and will
also be Volunteer Coordinators during Ram Camp Move-In and 9 Month Move-In.
Typical Duties
Collaboration
● Maintain daily contact with the Conference Planner of each conference staying on campus to
ensure that all conference needs are being met and to address any suggestions they might have
to improve the quality of the conference
● Collaborate with peers through duty shifts, building wide programs, and other team initiatives
● Collaborate with the AD to maintain accurate data entry for all summer group reservations and to
produce detailed group reports for department benchmarking
Inclusion & Diversity
Resident Centered
● Create and maintain quality bulletin boards to educate and inform the summer conference guests
about VCU's campus and surrounding community
● Respond to and mitigate conflict and crisis situations
● Assist conference guests with their needs and act as their main contact while on campus
● Ensure all guest rooms are clean and ready for conference groups, including proper distribution
of linens (immediately report any discrepancies directly to the AD)
● Provide continuous customer service for conference guests
Learning
● Support residents' development of skills related to civility, interpersonal dialogue, and responsible
behaviors through addressing policy violations, mediating roommate conflicts, and promoting
self-advocacy
Excellence
● Positively represent the University to conference guests and University faculty/staff
● Submit weekly reports, incident reports, occupancy reports, and other paperwork in a timely
manner
● Create, distribute, and analyze Satisfaction Surveys at the conclusion of every conference in
order to better serve conferences in the future
Typical Education and Experience
By the start of the CA's term, the CA must have lived in any university housing for a minimum of one full
academic year (fall + spring semesters). Must be affiliated with ACUHO-I.
