Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Division of Transplant Surgery is to provide excellence in clinical care, the advancement of science through research, and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department foster a level of professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

Chief Purpose of this position: This position is an instructor level position in the area of Transplant Surgery. This instructor should have primary clinical interests in the field of transplantation. Duties will include all responsibilities of the team attendings (inpatient rounds, clinics, consults, surgeries as primary and assistant surgeon, call, education, quality assurance). The VCU transplant team procures its own donor organs, and this position will also serve in support of that mission.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Teaching - Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Transplant Surgery.
  • Research - Faculty member will establish clinical research projects with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in at VCU. In addition, they will mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in their research laboratory.
  • Service – Serve on departmental and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, i.e., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
  • Clinical – Responsibilities are broad and include deceased and living donor kidney and liver transplantation, and pancreas transplantation. Additional opportunities exist with an extensive multidisciplinary hepato-biliary surgery practice as well as dialysis access (hemo and peritoneal).
  • Other - Responsibilities include and are not limited to the management of a growing general surgery group practice and administrative management of the Division of Transplant Surgery
Required Qualifications:
  • Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Transplant Surgery or foreign equivalent
  • ASTS Fellowship training in multi-organ transplantation and procurement
  • Able to meet licensing requirements in Virginia, and be UNOS certified or eligible
  • Teaching residents and medical students
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Board certification in General Surgery will be expected during the course of the appointment, commensurate with Board requirements.
