VCUarts Summer Pre-College Program Counselors and Senior Counselors

Description of the Job:
The Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts (VCUarts) seeks highly responsible and motivated counselors and senior counselors to assist with and provide leadership during the Summer Pre-College Program for High School Students.

The counseling team goal is to provide a superior quality experience for each high school participant. All counselors are required to be on-campus with the high school students, and assist them throughout the weekdays and weekends during the three-week program. Specific time/days for counselors to be on-campus will depend on daily assigned shifts. Some counselors will be required to live on campus during the summer program.

Counselors are expected to serve as ambassadors of the University and of the School of the Arts to visiting students and their parents. Counselors are required to attend all training sessions and meetings with the Head of Residence Life and the Program Director.

Counselor daily activities include escorting students to and from campus housing, meals, morning and afternoon classes, and planning and running evening modules and social activities throughout the three-week program. Counselors will also participate in field trips and other assigned group activities on weekends. Senior Counselor activities include helping lead counseling team training sessions, supervising, coaching and motivating a team of counselors, and resolving student and counselor concerns.

All counselors will attend online trainings at the end of June as well as an in-person training on July 6th. Training attendance is mandatory.

-A passion for working with students
-Positive, flexible, hard-working and engaging
-Excellent interpersonal skills including a high-level of desire, patience, and sensitivity to meet the needs of the students at all times
-A clear understanding of University and Residence Life policies, as well as the ability to monitor behavior and convey policies to the students
-Ability to clearly and assertively address minor infractions and misunderstandings
-Ability to provide leadership and to closely monitor the students throughout the program to ensure their safety
-Strong organization and communication skills
-A valid driver's license and transportation for Senior Counselors

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who are:
(1) VCU School of the Arts graduate students, rising junior or senior undergraduate students and alumni
(2) Those who have previous experience as a residence hall assistant
(3) Experience working at summer camps for high school students
(4) Teachers
