Mission of the Department
Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine at VCU has a long and proud history of research and scholarship focused on the practice of family medicine and family medicine education. It was the birthplace of the North American Primary Care Research Group (https://www.napcrg.org/) and the academic home for its founder, Dr. Maurice Wood.

Our Family Medicine Research team has a multi-disciplinary approach to research, coming from such fields as family medicine, health services, biostatistics and epidemiology, cultural anthropology, social and behavioral science, and public health. The team's research focuses on improving quality in primary care settings, with a special focus on helping patients improve health behaviors, harnessing information technology, and improving systems of care.

Our research faculty conduct innovative, multi-disciplinary research aimed at understanding the interface between behavior and physiology, and integrates social, psychological and biological approaches that provide insight on health and illness over the life course. The department hosts research programs in the dynamics of aging, cancer prevention and control, and emphasizing behavioral and mental health.

This department is also home to the Virginia Ambulatory Care Outcomes Research Network (ACORN), our well-respected practice-based research network composed of more than 90 practices throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Chief Purpose of the Position
The VCU Department of Family Medicine & Population Health seeks applicants for the position Vice Chair of Family Medical Education- School of Medicine. Clinical and "non clinical" applicants are welcome to apply. Clinician candidates may hold an appointment with both Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and MCV Physicians (MCVP), which is the faculty practice plan of VCU Health. Non-clinician candidates will be appointed as Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) faculty.

Position Responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities (Clinical applicants):
  • Provide the highest quality of patient care as a Family Medicine Physician
  • Commit to serving communities of underserved patients, providing full-spectrum outpatient primary care from newborn to geriatric patients
  • Serve as the first point of contact for patients and prepare appropriate treatment plans as necessary
  • Administer comprehensive wellness exams, referring patients to other providers for specialized treatment if necessary
  • Treat a wide range of medical issues, caring for the whole patient, including mental and emotional concerns
Educational Leadership responsibilities (all applicants):
  • Responsible for the management and administration of the department's Family Medicine medical education team across the domains of teaching, service, and scholarship
  • Serve as the primary departmental advocate for educational program funding, development, and improvement across the full spectrum of our medical education to include pipeline, UME, GME, and faculty development
  • Advise the Department Chair on educational priorities, funding needs, clinician-educator recruitment, and infrastructure support for educational programs
  • Be an active participant in the Department's scholarship programs, including serving as a mentor and co-author for faculty with specific interests in medical education scholarship
  • Ensure oversight so that all education programs meet and exceed compliance standards and policies, including accreditation standards and fostering trainee safety/well-being
Research responsibilities (all applicants):
  • Be an active participant in the Department's research programs which may require a level of extramurally funded research awards
Required Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of experience practicing clinically as a Family Medicine Physician OR 5 years of academic experience as an educational program leader
  • Terminal degree, M.D. or Ph.D.
  • Academic experience appropriate for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher
  • The applicant must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • (Clinical applicants) Be licensed to practice clinically in the Commonwealth of Virginia or the ability to obtain a license
  • (All applicants) Experience with medical education innovation and/or the development of new medical education programming
  • (All applicants) A history of extramurally funded research with a focus on medical education
  • (All applicants) A history of providing care to underserved populations across multiple settings
