Mission or Goal of Unit
VCU is a preeminent national, urban, public research university and academic health center located in Richmond, Virginia. The University holds research-intensive and community-engaged designations from the Carnegie Foundation (with very high research activity, a designation accorded to fewer than 3% of degree-granting institutions in the U.S.), and with external funding exceeding $360 million.
The Department of Physical Therapy is part of the College of Health Professions, an innovative, interdisciplinary college including a total of 11 units, in a state-of-the-art building that opened in Fall 2019 on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) campus. The Department is a thriving academic unit accredited since 1931. The Department includes approximately 54 professional students per class pursuing a DPT, physical therapy graduate students pursuing a PhD in Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences (REMS), 3 post-professional residencies, and extensive research laboratory space for pediatric and adult research of motor development, motor control, biomechanics, and human performance. Chief Purpose of this position
The Virginia Commonwealth University College of Health Professions invites candidates to apply for an open rank core faculty position in the Department of Physical Therapy. The primary responsibility of this position is to teach within one or more of the four physical therapy practice patterns course sequence: cardiovascular and pulmonary, integumentary, musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. This position will also have scholarship and service expectations. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position provides a significant opportunity to add to faculty diversity.
Position Responsibilities
Research - Primary focus position 1
- Engage in scholarly activity to enhance knowledge of Physical Therapy, which will contribute to the success of the Department and College
Teaching - Primary focus position 2
- Teach courses related to one or more of the physical therapy practice patterns course sequences, and contribute to other Department educational needs
- Participate in student success initiatives and advise students
- Demonstrate advanced skill and judgement, and actively contribute as a collective team member related to course design, development and integration
- Provide constructive and timely evaluation of students
Service
- Faculty member will serve on Department, College and/or University committees
- Provide professional and community service in an area of expertise
Required Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited Physical Therapy program
- Eligible for licensure to practice physical therapy in Virginia
- Academic doctorate (PhD, EdD, DrPH or DSc) in a relevant field or post-professional masters (MBA, MHA); ABD would be acceptable
- Ability to teach physical therapy-based courses, focused on clinical practice and other courses aligned with the candidate's areas of expertise
- Ability to complement and expand the existing expertise in the Department
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Position 1 also:
- Assistant Professor candidates will have a research agenda with potential for external funding
- Associate and Full Professor candidates will have a developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of interdisciplinary applications and external funding
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 2 years of teaching experience in a Physical Therapy entry-level program
- Scholarly and teaching experience in the areas of cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy or neurologic physical therapy. Position 2 - also, or in the areas of professional ethics, values and communications
- Experience in optimizing inclusive education and mentoring students from under-represented minority and/or historically marginalized communities
- APTA Board Certified Clinical Specialist
- Membership in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)
