Associate Desktop Engineer (Hybrid)

This important role will provide assistance with monitoring, maintaining, and evaluating the architecture and integration of all desktops, laptops, and associated peripheral devices for Virginia Housing. This role will support technologists in aligning Virginia Housing’s desktop environment with industry best practices, utilizing innovative technological solutions through research, design, development, and implementation, and maintaining a highly scalable desktop infrastructure. From a technology perspective, the Associate Systems Engineer provides hands-on subject matter expertise assuring stability, quality, and reliability of Virginia Housing’s desktop and application platforms.
Responsibilities will include:
- Ensuring that the desktop/laptop/peripheral devices are updated with current, stable versions of software products; maintain currency with operating system and support software; assist in planning and deployment development of major desktop hardware/software upgrades; ensures change management procedures and methodologies are implemented and followed, and report findings to Systems Engineer.
- Assist Desktop Systems Engineers with evaluating Desktop Architecture including, but not limited to, systems support development, workload modeling and prediction, maintenance and monitoring automation, internal design development specifications, information security, mitigation/reduction of systems impact on environment, and make necessary recommendations for changes or enhancements needed to IT leadership.
- Assist Desktop Systems Engineers with evaluating Desktop Lifecycle Management strategy, ensure accuracy, and provide recommendations to the IT Leadership.
- Evaluating tools for implementation and maintenance of desktop hardware, images, laptops, peripherals, and desktop maintenance and provide recommendations to the Desktop Systems Engineers.
- Assist in planning and deployment of major desktop hardware/software upgrades and ensure change management procedures and methodologies are implemented and followed.
- Identify opportunities and recommend solutions for improving service efficiency and effectiveness and participate in ITS initiatives to address service issues.
- Work with Software Licensing Specialist to maintain PC/workstation-based application software versions, software deployment and license tracking, and recommend refreshment timeline for software upgrades.
- Monitor and ensure endpoint patch compliance and alignment with industry standards, ensuring technologists are following procedures, mitigating known risks, and utilizing due diligence
- Acquire and maintain current knowledge of relevant product offerings and support policies and evaluate desktop/laptop technology offerings from various vendors, and plan for future technology changes.
Qualified candidates must possess:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related area required, or equivalent work experience acceptable
- Basic experience with desktop, server, and mobile device technologies.
- Basic experience with various image deployment tools such as Microsoft Desktop Deployment Toolkit.
- Knowledge and experience with scripting languages, multiple packaging / deployment applications, and distribution methods.
- Requires proven project management and methodology skills especially the ability to serve as a technical lead or coordinator and work on multiple projects simultaneously, especially in a cross-functional environment.
- Knowledge of information security principles.
Preferred experience includes:
- Minimum of three years of experience in Desktop Architecture/Engineering or application packaging
- Experience with multi-platform and operating systems environments
- Experience with endpoint security and related concepts
- Knowledge and experience with SCCM and MDM, including design, proofs of concept, pilot implementations, packaging, and image deployment technologies.
- Several years knowledge of patch management and software distribution.
